My NCBI

An introductory guide to the navigation and use of the National Center for Biotechnology Information's My NCBI tool on PubMed.

Filters

Filters allow you to group results based on your personal preferences. You can filter your search results in many NCBI databases. Available filters vary from database to database. In PubMed you can filter your results by publication type, language, and several other criteria. The example below shows how to display filter tabs in PubMed. To create filter tabs to group your results.

  1. Sign in to My NCBI.
  2. The Filters panel should be visible on your My NCBI page. If it's not, click the "Customize this page" link at the top right of your My NCBI page, and select Filters as a visible panel. Click the text link "Manage Filters" at the bottom of the Filters panel.
  3. Select the database in which to create the filters. In this example we chose PubMed.
  4. Choose "Popular Filters," "LinkOut," "Properties," "Links," or "Search with terms (optional)" and select your preferred filters. Alternatively, you can click the "Create custom filter" button and make your own filter using keywords.

Filters on PubMed

After you run your searches in PubMed you will now see your customized filters to the right of the results. Click on one of the filter text links to

display only those references corresponding to the selected filter. You can access and manage your filters by using the "Manage filters" text link below your custom filters.

Note that your customized filters are different from PubMed's after-search filters (which have replaced PubMed Limits), shown on the left, that display many ways to narrow your searches.
