Feinberg Research Support

A summary of support services offered through the Feinberg School of Medicine

Northwestern Medicine Enterprise Data Warehouse (NMEDW)

The NMEDW is a centralized database repository containing clinical, financial, operational, and regulatory data on patients who receive their care from the Northwestern family of healthcare providers and is designed to advance research, clinical quality, healthcare operations, and medical education. See the Permissible Use Policy to find out if the NMEDW can be useful for your research project.

i2b2 (Informatics for Integrating Biology & the Bedside)

The NMEDW provides access to the i2b2 feasibility query tool.

  • Designed to help asses the feasibility of research studies, this freely available, self-service tool is used to identify cohort availability within the NMEDW.
  • Helps researchers determine answers to questions such as, “Does the NMEDW contain enough patients that meet my study criteria?
  • Features
    • Aggregate counts of patients meeting defined criteria
    • No approval needed (includes prep-to-research data only, no PHI)
  • Example query: “How many patients have we had over the years with ovarian cancer and a recurrence in the brain?
  • To access i2b2...
    • Sign up for an account.
    • To connect to i2b2, you must be on campus or use the GlobalProtect VPN.

The ACT Network

The ACT Network allows researchers to explore and validate feasibility for clinical studies across many of the NCATS Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) sites using the i2b2 tool.
