Northwestern Elements

Northwestern Elements is web-based warehouse of information about scholarly products.

Getting started with Northwestern Elements

What is Elements?

Northwestern Elements is a warehouse of scholarly products. This web-based system allows for a continuous, dynamic feed of publication information from multiple sources. Elements is provided by Galter Health Sciences Library & Learning Center. There is no public interface for the data added to Northwestern Elements. Profiles can be viewed by any other user in the Northwestern Elements system.

How do I access Elements?

Access Elements directly: https://elements.northwestern.edu

Log in with your NetID and password using Multi-factor Authentication.

Need help with your NetID?

  • The library does not issue or maintain NetIDs and associated passwords.
  • Check to see if you have a NetID by searching in the NU Online Directory.
  • If you already have a NetID, but don't know your NetID password (because it's forgotten or expired), you can try to reset your NetID password online.
  • If the online option does not work for you, you can visit the NUIT Support Kiosk located in the WildCARD office in Abbott Hall. Here you can receive an activation code that you can use to log in to NU Validate and update a forgotten or expired NetID password.
  • If you cannot reset your NetID password online or are unable to visit the NUIT Support Kiosk, contact NUIT at 847-491-HELP.

Who is my Super User in Northwestern Elements?

Super users edit publication information in Northwestern Elements on behalf of faculty. You can find your super user by contacting your department administrators. See here: https://www.feinberg.northwestern.edu/fao/for-faculty/online-presence/staff-support.html

Are you a new Super User of Northwestern Elements?

New super users of Northwestern Elements should sign up for an in-person Northwestern Elements class, where they will receive the necessary permissions to be a super user. If super users prefer taking the pre-recorded class, they need to email ghsl-ref@northwestern.edu or contact their Liaison Librarian ahead of time to request the necessary permissions to be a super user for Northwestern Elements.

I need help and training!

Don't worry, Elements help documentation is available in this guide.

Galter Health Sciences Library & Learning Center holds semi-regular training in curating and refining publication data in Elements. Training will include the following:

  • Online Class: A one-hour workshop for administrative "super users" to learn how to use the Elements interface and manage publication data. Sign up here: https://galter.northwestern.edu/course_info/241
  • Recorded Class: A one-hour recorded class for administrative super users to refresh their skills after attending an in-person class or for new super users to learn how to use the Elements interface. Download and view here (.mp4 file): 2022_04-12 Northwestern Elements Class Recording
  • Consultation: One on one consultation for super users to work with a librarian to learn the interface and custom curation of publication data.
