Manual Entry Context

Manual Entry Context

You can add publications manually if they are not found in the online databases that are searched by Elements. Because the publication may already exist in Elements or because there maybe a record of the publication in an external database not currently searched by Elements, you will be asked to search Elements (and Elements will also do a search in an "external database") prior to manually entering the publication's information.

Before manually entering publications, you must first impersonate the user you are working on. To watch a video demonstration of this process, click here.

Manually Add a Book

Users may want to search outside sources for books, such as NLM’s LocatorPlus, Google Books and Clinical Key. Additional sources of data for books can be found in the table at the bottom of this page. Google Books is a “manual entry” data source for Northwestern Elements. This means that Elements does not search Google Books directly, instead users can use the +add button in the “My Summary” section of their home page. Enter the book’s title or ISBN and Elements will search Google Books for metadata and offer this metadata as an option. Please note that Google Book data is not always complete or correct.
