Some common and not-so-common questions about EndNote.

Syncing EndNote Across Devices

  1. Create an EndNote Online account

     
  2. Sync your EndNote Desktop to your EndNote Online (in the Desktop version)
    • On a Mac: Endnote Tab → Preferences → Sync
    • On a PC: Edit Tab → Preferences → Sync
  3. Download EndNote for iPad (iOS) and login with your EndNote Online account
  4. Now EndNote on all your devices should be synced and available to use interchangeably.

N.B. You can sync only ONE EndNote library to your Online and iOS accounts.

Getting References In

  • Manually enter references
  • Search PubMed from EndNote  and import desired references 
  • Import references from databases (e.g. PubMed, Embase, and Scopus)

Organizing References

  • Create groups and group sets
  • Organize references
  • Remove duplicates
  • Edit references 
  • Use Find Full Text feature to search for and attach PDF files
  • Sync references to and from your EndNote for iPad and/or EndNote Online

Getting References Out

  • Cite-While-You-Write (CWYW) feature embedded within Microsoft Word for in-text citations and reference list 
  • Generate a stand-alone bibliography
  • Export references

What works:

Getting References In

  • Manually enter references
  • Search databases (e.g. PubMed, Embase, and Scopus) on Safari via in-app browser and import desired references 

Organizing References

  • Create groups
  • Edit references 
  • Download PDF files and attach them to EndNote records
  • Attach PDF to the EndNote iOS from EndNote Desktop and/or EndNote Online account
  • Annotate PDF files including: inserting notes, highlighting, underlining, shapes, strikethrough and free hand drawing – Annotations can be synced and saved to your account on EndNote Desktop and EndNote Online
  • Sync references to and from your EndNote Desktop and/or EndNote Online

Getting References Out

  • Very limited features available for creating a reference list or bibliography
    • Copy Citation or
    • Copy Temporary Citation {Author Name, Year}, then 
    • Manually paste in to Word and format using the Cite While You Write (CWYW) feature with EndNote Desktop or EndNote Online 

What does NOT work:

  • Cannot create group sets
  • Cannot organize references
  • Does not have the Remove Duplicates feature 
  • Does not have Cite-While-You-Write (CWYW) feature

  • Cite-While-You-Write (CWYW) plug-in available for Internet Explorer for Windows or Safari for Mac
  • Generate a stand-alone bibliography
  • Export references

What does NOT work:

  • Does not have the Cite-While-You-Write (CWYW) feature embedded within Microsoft Word for in-text citations and reference list
